My role and main contributions

My role and main contributions

Junior Report is a digital newspaper for young people from the content producer Blue Globe Media. As a graphic and web designer, I participated in the entire web redesign process, from defining objectives to publishing the site. My main contribution was in the visual design, ensuring that the graphic style reflected the project's identity. The technical part was a collaborative effort that allowed for the efficient integration of visual elements with the functionality of the newspaper.

Challenge

Challenge

Junior Report is a project aimed at bringing journalism closer to schools and promoting critical thinking among young audiences. Every day, it publishes a piece of global news accompanied by an educational activity to work on in the classroom or from home.

Our challenge was to redesign the digital newspaper considering four main objectives:

· Unify the two editions of the newspaper (catalan and spanish) into a single website.

· Integrate educational content alongside the newspaper’s news articles.

· Implement three types of subscriptions.

· Renew the newspaper’s image to align it with the project’s graphic style.

Subscription model benchmarks

Subscription model benchmarks

During our research, we analyzed current subscription models in digital journalism and found that there are no examples that integrate news with educational content. However, we used these models as references to select the one that best fit the project’s requirements.

Based on the business model and the project’s needs, we chose the Freemium model.

With the collected information, we defined the information architecture for the new website of the newspaper. The sitemap includes the key elements of the project, allowing users to explore the news by sections, access educational content exclusive to subscribers, subscribe, access their account page, subscribe to the newsletter, and/or contact the team.

In the web redesign, it was essential to ensure clear navigation, especially when accessing the educational activities. We mapped the path that users needed to follow to reach this content, considering that a subscription was required, according to the freemium model.

Before the redesign, the newspaper's website had poor navigation. To access the educational content, users had to be redirected to another website. The same happened when trying to access the content in Spanish, which redirected to La Vanguardia.

After the redesign, not only was the user experience optimized, but the website's visual identity was also aligned with the project's visual identity. Additionally, a freemium subscription model was implemented, adapting to the project's business model and improving the accessibility and overall coherence of the site.

Learnings

Since the redesign of this website was done before my training in UX/UI, upon thinking about the process, I believe it would have been useful to implement actions such as user testing with real users. This would have allowed for direct feedback on functionality and usability, enabling more precise iterations of the design.

It would also have been valuable to analyze the metrics before and after the redesign, in order to have more specific data on the impact of the improvements in the new version of the site.
